The Nila Necklace.





Easy. Yummy. Healthy. What more could you ask for?


Easy snack recipes that are quick, healthy, don't require any crazy ingredients and actually taste good can be incredibly hard to find. UNTIL NOW. Joyous Health totally saved us in this department (you need to check out this site for amazing recipes). This protein bar recipe seriously fulfilled my healthy/yummy snack requirements. Ingredients for these bars include: Bananas, oats, organic chocolate chips, almond butter, cinnamon, sea salt, protein powder. I absolutely loved the sweet/salty combo and find these bars are best straight from the freezer after a workout or as an afternoon snack.  Say hello to easy to make, easier to eat protein bars.

Spread Some Love: The Death Race

          Today's Spread Some Love feature post is about a group of 5 women who threw excuses out the window and said hell yes to an amazing adventure and incredible challenge. They tackled the Death Race held in Grande Cache, Alberta. Check out this Q & A session with them.

      1) What does the Death Race actually mean? 
 As Terri puts it, "the Death Race is a 125 km race ran over 24 hours through the Rocky Mountains.  The race can be done by just one person (they're called 'soloists' and unbelievably inspiring) or by groups of up to 5 people, with each person running one or more legs.  We had a group of 5 wonderful women, each running a distance between 19 and 38 km.  The course includes the summit of 3 different mountains (and their descents!), running through rivers, mud, rocks and on narrow, slippery trails in the dark.  The weather can be pretty crazy too, from snow to hail to rain to heat.  There's a lot going on in this race!!" 

2    2) So what made you decide to do the race anyways? I mean it is called the Death Race. That's a little       scary.
     Jenn & Jen agreed to do the race when it just happened to come up in conversation. Jenn W had some extra inspiration because she’s originally from Grand Cache and spent the first 18 years of her life staring up at those mountains. It became her personal challenge to tackle them.Terri acknowledged that “sometimes just saying 'Yes!' to something can lead to a brilliant adventure”. 

       Let me just start by saying these ladies are awesome. Let’s be honest, if someone asked me to be a part of a 125km race, I’d need to think about it. HARD. Like majorly sleep on it. Thank you for reminding me that saying yes is totally the way to go.
  3) What were you thinking about when you were racing? And what did you wish you had brought with you?
My leg of the race was either grueling uphill or treacherous downhill.  Negotiating the terrain as fast as I could took most of my brainpower!  I was pretty well prepared but if I'd known how hard the hail would've been, I'd have brought a helmet! – Terri

When I was racing I was thinking about not slowing down! I realized that if I pushed really hard, we could likely make it in under 20 hrs.  I wanted to finish strong for my team who had given me such a strong start! – Jen C

The race was very emotional for me.  I was never a runner and a year prior to the race I was barely able to run/walk 10 km and here I was running 38km up and down a mountain.  I was also very grateful for being physically able to do this race and for all the support that I received from my teammates over the year to help me get to the point that I was able to complete my leg of the race. - Jenn W

Again, inspired. These ladies pushed aside every excuse in the book and made it happen. I admire them for that. This also reminded me of the incredible power of a goal. Once they had committed to it, done deal, they were in. All in.

1    I want to thanks these amazing women for reminding us: 1) that setting goals is still very cool and that doing it with friends is even better. 2) that we shouldn't limit ourselves based on what we can achieve at one moment in time because heck, those mountains were meant to be climbed! 3) that letting go of fear and saying YES makes you a heck of a lot stronger both physically and mentally.

I love picnics!

So last weekend I decided to go on a picnic. Seriously, what better way to enjoy a sunny afternoon! Calgary has some truly beautiful areas that are perfect for picnics like Prince’s Island Park or the Glenmore Reservoir. I love to make lists to make sure that I don’t forget things. For picnics I found that the essentials are:

- Ice pack
- Bottle of water
- Cups, plates, utensils (I brought real dinnerware instead plastic – feels fancier!)
- Cutting board (this doubled as my serving tray)
- Sharp knife
- Napkins
- Blanket to sit on
- Basket
- Magazine to catch up on fashion trends and celebrity gossip


We just kept our picnic menu simple and fun with some sandwiches, fruit, and then cheesecake for dessert. I’m thinking next time it would be fun to pick a theme like French (baguette, cheese, fruit) or Greek (hummus, pita bread, olives, veggies). I forgot how much I love picnics and can't wait for the next one.
